Make the most of your studio

Here at Furnish 123, we understand small spaces! Studio apartments are fun and affordable rental options but can be difficult to decorate. If you’re planning on furnishing a studio apartment, dividing your room will help make your place feel more spacious and unique. Here are our suggestions for dividing studios and making the most of an efficiency apartment.

  • Utilize furniture to create barriers. A desk, bookshelf or sofa are all great options that create the impression of two different rooms. We love this option because it’s inexpensive when using furniture you already own, it’s easy and it really makes the most of a small space.

This F123 desk separates the living room from the bedroom AND creates an efficient workspace in this studio.

  • Add a folding screen or curtains in between rooms. These are both equally inexpensive options that are also easy to put up and take down. You’ll have the freedom to rearrange your space as often as you please with this simple option.

  • Decorate with mirrors. They’ll help add the illusion and more depth in your small space and help it feel lighter and brighter.

  • Let the light in! Use light curtains and blinds that allow light to shine through your small space. The more light you let in, the larger the room will feel.

Office Space

Whether your desk is at home or in an office, your workspace is an important area to decorate. You’ll want to be sure your desk is a comfortable space that reflects your personal style and allows you to be as productive as possible. Here are our favorite tips for making your workspace work for you.

  • Add some plants. No we’re not talking about plastic trees here – we mean the real deal. Find some greenery that thrives in your office light and incorporate the plants in to your desk design. We love simple succulents to brighten up a desk.

  • Color is key. You don’t have to go crazy with color but pick a palette that fuels your work and stick with it. Splashes of color will add personal style to your workspace. Bright colors are said to help stimulate creativity!

  • Organize, organize, organize. Taking the time to arrange your office will make your life easier in the future. Limit the chaos and add cord organizers, paper organizers and supplies in accessible spots.

  • Pay attention to where you sit. Choose a chair that is the most comfortable and ergonomic for you. It’s so important to be physically comfortable while working so take the time to select a chair that meets your needs.

Guest Post: Tolly Moseley from Austin Eavesdropper shares her deadly furniture “purchase”

To celebrate the fact that “You Never Forget Your First,” Austin Blogger Tolly Moseley of Austin Eavesdropper and Austin designer/blogger Maureen Stevens of  Inspired Mrs. Stevens  have been guest blogging on our F123 blog about their first and worst furniture adventures. They’re also designing beautiful spaces at F123 which will be showcased at our Back to School Bash on Tuesday August 30th from 6 pm – 9pm.  (Here’s a sneak peak)

Tolly’s guest post about her first “adult” furniture purchase was about a beautiful fainting couch.  Today, Tolly shares about a purchase that wasn’t quite as pretty but could cause someone to faint from the ugly.

Here’s Tolly talking about her worst:

Last week, I shared a story about my apple green fainting sofa, a story about the first adult furniture purchase I ever made.  A love story.

But this week, I’d like to tell you about the couch that one replaced.

When I was 22, I rented a little studio apartment on 45th and Speedway that lacked a couch.  So I walked to what was once Hyde Park Thrift Store (and what is now a scuba supply shop) and picked something out.  It was burnt orange, with seams bursting apart, and weighed roughly the same as a vehicle.  That’s because it contained a whole fold-out bed, and while I wasn’t sure how I would get it up to my second floor apartment, I knew I’d think of something.

Tolly's Worst Furniture "purchase"

On the day that I moved, it was raining.  My then boyfriend (now husband) and his buddy agreed to move my monstrosity of a couch upstairs, up a winding wet staircase, while they themselves also got rained on.  Long story short, this couch nearly killed my future husband.

It was such a God-awful, ugly couch that when I moved out of that apartment, I “gifted” it to the next tenant.

Guest Post from Maureen Stevens: My first adult furniture – white tufted chairs

We are inspired by the fabulous style and impeccable taste of Austin designer and blogger Maureen Toribio-Stevens.  She was brought to attention by Austin blogger, Tolly Moseley of Austin Eavesdropper after we posted a comment on our F123 Facebook wall about wanting to use local designers as our guest designers and bloggers at F123. Tolly suggested that we check out Maureen. We did  and we loved what we found: Maureen has a beautiful online shop called  The Inglenook Decor   which features lovely home accents and modern vintage furnishings. Her blog, Inspired Mrs. Stevens, chronicles her design finds and adventures.

She and Tolly will be guest blogging this month about their furniture adventures. They will also design a space at F123 which will be showcased at the Back to School Bash on Tuesday August 30th, at the F123 store.

Today, Maureen shares her memories of her very first furniture purchase because you never forget your first. Welcome, Maureen!
