The temperatures are starting to get colder and soon we’ll be facing another winter season. Fortunately here in Austin, our winters aren’t too brutal (we did get some snow last year!) but it’s still important to get your home ready for the colder temperatures. We know your home is an investment and we want to make sure it stays safe and warm throughout winter.
Here are our top tips for winterizing your home.
- Check for leaks. Be sure to look all around windows and doors for leaks and drafts that your warm air may be escaping from. If you find any holes, weather-stripping and caulking are a surefire way to seal them up. Make sure your door seals properly, as well.
- Prepare your fireplace. Cap your chimney to keep out pesky rodents and birds and if the chimney hasn’t been cleaned it awhile, call an expert to come remove soot.
- Check you insulation. Often times, it doesn’t get cold enough in Austin to need extra insulation through the winter but it’s still important to check your insulation and make sure every thing is still intact.
- Prepare an emergency kit. Don’t let rolling blackouts get you down! Have a supply of indoor candles and lighters ready in case you lose power. Be sure your computers are plugged in to power strips to avoid shortages and grab an extra battery pack to protect your computer, too.
